Hi guys.
I want a GPS system & need to upgrade my phone so I thought I'd get a
phone that has GPS functionality.
I went to the Nokia website & could find no phone that had GPS as an
option. I know you have to install software but is that all that you
have to do?
Thanx 4 looking.

What you normally have to do with Nokia phones is to get a Symbian S60
type phone with Bluetooth. Then you need to get a Bluetooth GPS device,
which can be found on eBay.

Re: How Can a Mobile Phone be Used as a GPS Device
I am using software smartcomgps on a Nokia 6260 (Series 60 symbian phone)
with a Holux Slim236 bluetooth GPS receiver.
Have all of Sydney and Melbourne (to street level ) maps. Plus Aust states
and SE Australia. You will need a memory card.
Works brilliant.
www.wild-mobile.com also for UIQ and other Symbian OS phones.
Some Motorolas have built in GPS but suggest go for an external as not
locked into possible poor sensitivity chipset. GPSlim236 works in a pocket
and indoors.
Also excellent city canyon coverage.

Re: How Can a Mobile Phone be Used as a GPS Device
Specifically answering your query:
1) Need a phone with GPS receiver built-in
or
2) phone with bluetooth
3) GPS receiver with bluetooth
4) software and maps on your phone (eg SmartcomGPS for Symbian phones).
Compatible with Oziexplorer files. Easily convert Ozi image maps or
scan/make your own.

Does it cost money to use the service? or do you just download it, with the
relevant bluetooth device and use it?

Once you have purchased the Bluetooth capable GPS Unit and appropriate
software to make use of the GPS data it will be free from then on.
Bluetooth uses 2.4GHz at very low power to allow coverage of about 10
Metres from each device, although some devices do have a range rated at
100 Metres or more.

Like the functionality of a $200 handheld GPS, or satellite
navigation?, for basic functionality see below, for navigation, see the
other replies.

http://www.nokia-asia.com/phones/5140/ - check phone features, used to
be the big selling point for the phone. The GPS is built into one of
the Xpress-on covers, uses seperate batteries too (2xAA I think). I
wanted to own one once apon a time, but it's a little dated now (there
is also a 5140i that came out a few months ago with a few minor
upgrades).
