Hello, i am extremely knew to cell phones/plans. I have just received a Sony Ericsson z520a. I now need a SIM card. My location is Toronto, Canada. And i really dont know the prices of SIM cards here. I asked someone and they said they would sell it to me for 50 (already activated with minutes on it) a Fido prepaid SIM card. But that seemed extremely expensive. So does anyone know how much a SIM card would be around here? and how much to activate it? Also does Fido have a payasyougo plan? Because they only mention prepaid on their website and i haven't really had time to visit their stores lately. Thx for all your input.

I'm also a cell phone newbie. The only thing I can tell you is that Fido does have pay as you go plans, but it's a ripoff(or at least for me it is). I'm paying 20 cents a minute for talking, and 15 cents for text messaging. Also, unless you buy at least a $20 phone card each month, you're going to be paying 30 cents a minute to talk.

By the way, I also got a Sony Ericsson... very nice phone!

Sign up for a cell phone service and they will give you the sim card as long as you have a compatible phone. (I Believe)

    Re: SIM card issues

SIMs in Canada cost about $25.

A prepaid SIM for $50 may be a good deal if it has $75-100 of airtime on it. If it doesn't, unless you are going to use a lot of airtime in a short period it is probably better to get your own prepaid account.

Buying prepaid accounts from other users occasionally does make sense though. I got my US T-Mobile SIM that way.

Make sure your phone supports at least GSM 1900 or it won't work here. For optimal service it should support both GSM 850 and 1900. GSM 900 and 1800 are needed to operate abroad (in most countries). Bear in mind that Canadian prepaid service does not work abroad.
