hi,
I'm trying to get a Nokia 6822 enabled for GPRS on the Vodafone UK Pay As
You Talk service. I've been assured by Vodafone that the mobile number has
been switched on for GPRS at their end. I've tried downloading several
configs both from Vodafone UK and Nokia UK, but none of these files seem to
match my phone exactly, so I guess what i need to do is manually insert
each setting. I tried to get the Vodafone support people to help me do
that, but they said it would take too long over the phone and that the
support call would be terminated before they could finish. They suggested I
should go to a Vodafone shop but that's not very practical for me to do as
I'm disabled - but I will do that if all else fails.
So if anyone has a working config for this or, if they have the time and
patience to help me out I'd be very grateful indeed. I'm on various IM
networks so could even do it in realtime chat if need be.

Check out www.filesaveas.co.uk for configuration information on all UK
networks. I've used their pages to set a few mobiles on WAP and GPRS and
the only problem I had was being told by a network operator that GPRS was
enabled when it wasn't

Thanks, those settings work AFAIK - I get a 'G' indicator whilst browsing
in top left corner - but I'm trying to use a 3rd party comms app that
requires internet access. The app just doesn't seem to see the internet
connection. I've activated the current config for all apps but I'm still
getting an "Error occurred whilst ope...". The text scrolls off the screen
at that point, but I assume it's "...whilst opening connection". The app
prompts "Allow network access?" which I answer 'Yes' to, but still no joy.
Any ideas? Security settings maybe?
TIA,
T.

Do Vodafone allow full internet access on PAYT? The only operator I'd
heard of doing that was Orange.

Well I've asked repeatedly and they've assured me my number is switched on
for GPRS. However, PAYT and Contract use different config settings. How
could you test you had full internet access anyway? Try out POP3 mail,
SSH/Telnet...?

Yes I know that, but how do you know when you have it for sure when they
enable it? My phone displays a 'G' symbol when I'm browsing - I take
that's GPRS?

pp.vodafone.co.uk is what I've got set at the mo.

Just enabling GPRS may not be sufficient. You also (from the sound of
it) need full internet access.
Most PAYG (with the notable exception of Orange) only allows WAP access
or restricted access via proxies with only a few ports open.
You often need a pay monthly tariff for full internet. Even then some
"full internet" access has port blocking.
If you can access POP3 or SSH (there is a free SSH midlet around) that's
a good sign.
However the only way to be really sure is to try to try to connect to
the same site and the same port that your midlet is trying to access.

>From personal experience it may be worth double checking that the APN
(Access Point Name) has gone in correctly. If you're using a pay as you
talk mobile then this needs to be pp.vodafone.co.uk rather than
wap.vodafone.co.uk (the latter is for contract internet access only).
You could always email Vodafone Customer services on www.vodafone.co.uk
and they can send you a copy of their full generic GPRS Vodafone
settings so you can double check everything.
