The HTC One did a pretty good job when it was up against the Samsung Galaxy S4 but can it do as well against the Sony Xperia Z? The Sony Xperia Z is far less popular than the Samsung Galaxy S4 but did manage to do quite well against it. But does that mean it will do just as well against the HTC One? The HTC One is one of the most under rated smart-phones in the market today and let’s hope it can do just as well against the Xperia Z. Read on to find out more...

    Size and weight

In terms of size, the HTC One measures 137.4 x 68.2 x 9.3 mm while the Sony Xperia Z measures 139 x 71 x 7.9 mm. From these figures it is clearly noticeable that the HTC One is shorter and narrower while the Xperia Z is thinner. It wouldn’t be fair to say that the HTC One is better though as the Xperia Z does have a bigger display. There isn’t a noticeable difference in weight between both these smart-phones either with the HTC One measuring 143 g and the Xperia Z measuring 146 g. Both these phones are a little on the heavier side but a 3 g difference between both means that no one will really care for the weight difference.

It wouldn’t be fair to award this point to either. It’s a draw.

    Display

In terms of displays the Xperia Z has a bigger screen at 5.0” while the HTC One has a smaller screen at 4.7”. But both smart phones offer a maximum resolution of 1,920 x 1,080. A noticeable point here is that the Xperia Z has just a TFT screen while the HTC One has a S-LCD 3 screen. The display quality on the HTC One will be much better as well since it has a pixel density of 468 ppi as compared to the 443 ppi of the Xperia Z.

Even though the Xperia Z has a bigger display, the HTC One has a better display and that is why it is going to get this point.

    Memory & Storage

This is one point where both these smart-phones really disappoint. Neither have sufficient memory options. The Xperia Z has user memory of 16 GB with memory expansion up to 32 GB (through microSD, microSDHC). The HTC One on the other hand does not allow any memory expansion and has just 26 GB of user memory. This isn’t something that I would expect from a top end smart-phone.

It’s really disappointing but the Xperia Z gets this point just because it offers memory expansion capabilities.

    Camera

The Xperia Z does not disappoint when it comes to the camera but this can’t be said for the HTC One. The Xperia Z comes with a 13.1 MP camera on the back while the HTC One comes with a meager 4 MP camera on the back. The HTC One does a lot better as far as the front camera is concerned though with a 2.1 MP front facing camera as compared to a 2.2 MP front facing camera for the Xperia Z. This means that the video calling experience on the HTC One will be just as good as any of the top end smart phones out there today including the Xperia Z.

But still, you can’t really expect a top end smart phone to break records with a 4 MP camera. This point goes to the Xperia Z.

    OS & Performance

Both these smart phones run on the latest Android operating system 4.2.2 (JellyBean). This means that there is no major difference between the OS or the interface between both these smart phones. Even when it comes to the system chip, both smart phones are pretty similar with the Xperia Z running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 chip and the HTC One running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 APQ8064T. Both phones also have Adreno 320 graphics processors on board. The only notable difference here is that the HTC One has a Quad-core, 1700 MHz processor while the Xperia Z has a Quad-core, 1500 MHz processor.

But really, there isn’t much difference between both these smart phones in terms of performance. This one is a draw.

    Battery

While there isn’t any information available regarding the battery life of the HTC One, it comes with a 2,300 mAh battery which is almost the same as the Xperia Z’s 2,330 mAh battery. The Xperia Z claims to offer a standby time of around 23 days and I’m pretty sure the HTC One won’t be much less since HTC phones tend to have a good battery life.

Since there is so little information available about the battery life of the HTC One, I have no choice but to award this point to neither of the competitors.

    Price

This is the shocker. Did you know that you could pick up an HTC One for almost half the amount of money you would spend on the Sony Xperia Z? That’s right, the Xperia Z can be purchased without a contract for around $ 650 while the HTC One can be purchased with $ 350. For those of you on a tight budget, the HTC One has been priced low just for you.

No doubts here, the point goes to the HTC One.

    Conclusion

For a smart phone that thrashed the Lumia 920 and Apple iPhone 5, the HTC One doesn’t have quite the same result with the Sony Xperia Z. Yes, it does manage to tie the score at 2 a piece but considering it is severely lacking in both storage and camera which are a couple of the most important aspects of any smart phone, I don’t think it’s cheaper price tag and quality screen will be able to do much to sway customers in its direction. Plus, the Xperia Z is waterproof which in itself is a pretty tough act to beat. If I were a betting man, I would put my money on the Sony Xperia Z. But certainly not because the HTC One is a bad phone.

Would like to add that the HTC One costs $ 640 which quite honestly isn't worth it.
