Strange. My wife and daughter moved on to Voda for a year (last
year) and the call (audio) quality to both was dire. The locations
were different - one in Bedford and the other in London. I found the
same when I have a Voda from work. All were 2G.

I've found the call quality on T-mobile, Orange and O2 (2G) all OK,
with 3 being excellent (down to 3G I guess).

I'd think twice about using Voda simply because of the poor audio
    quality I've experienced.

o2 simplicity comes with a free bolt on for £20, a superb deal, no minimum
term, 600 mins a month and a thousand texts, check out the bolt ons, they
    are amazing value.

What sound quality would you get from T Mobile in one of their
    many black spots?

Using Voda i would look for an unlocked 3g phone and make
sure the Voda sim is 3g/2g compatible
Or simply go for a voda phone deal that included a 3g phone

Close, but no cigar. I want it to look like a plain ordinary contract, from
the parental PoV, and I want the kids' usage to join in with that contract
when they call one of a small set of numbers, but otherwise to look like PAYG
    to them.

Half a dozen years ago, I found a 11/12yo boy hiding behind our wheelie-bin
sobbing his socks off, because he knew that up the hill, half a dozen older
boys were waiting to kick the **** out of him because of some disagreement
involving an older brother. He couldn't call home for help because he'd
run out of credit. My kids were at primary school at the time and neither
had, or needed, a phone, but it struck me then that a mobile phone system
that can't sove that problem has an unpleasant flaw---one I'd like to avoid
when it comes to my own kids using them. I took him home---or, at least,
near enough home that he wasn't worried any more.

Oh, and FamilyMobile uses T-Mobile, which might work OK for my daughter,
while she's still with Virgin (most of her mobile activity is actually
from home, and there's a mast on the hill opposite) but is no use to me
at all, from the coverage PoV.

Orange have a system called "your group" which matches your description
    to a tee.

That's useful, thanks. The reason I didn't go to Orange when I was looking
to leave V a couple of years ago is that they couldn't ever get SMS to work
on any of the three spare phones I offered them. I collected a `plain
ordinary PAYG' SIM for three non-V providers with the intention of carrying
a spare phone with each SIM in it around with me to check coverage.

T-Mobile coverage turned out to be woeful, and Orange never got my old T68i,
k750i, or k800i (all unlocked to start with or professionally unlocked, and
all capable of doing so on other networks) to be capable of sending a text
message. The combined wisdom of my local Orange shop shrugged its collective
shoulders at me eventually, and I walked. I'm a satisfied O2 customer now,
and sometime next week when the PAC arrives, my daughter will be as well.

When I used to drive buses they (it was always without exception teenage

    Why, FFS..?!!

I remember the manager of our local Orange shop telling me once that he
had regular customers (again, *always* teenage girls) who would put £5 of
credit on their PAYG phones and then come back in the next day for another
    fiver..!

    I'm just glad I don't have kids..!

OK so how would you propose to use VOI on which mobile phones,
on what network, for how much?

I wouldn't. I only use mobiles for calls that are essential while out.
Anything else can wait until I get home or to the office where landlines
    and/or VoIP are available.

However a phone with WiFi would enable SIP to be used at a suitable
    hotspot.

That's rather a sweeping statement, given that (AFAIK) we've never met.

Do you have a reply that is on topic..?
